Lovely Family Research

Nelson Lovely

Items in hand with documentation:
  • 1930 US Federal Census
  • Marriage License & Certificate
  • Funeral Card (Recieved at Funeral)
  • Several Newspaper Articles
  • Listing on the Social Security Death Index
  • WWII Military Enrollment Card
  • Death Record Abstract
  • Obituaries

It was rather exciting to finally find Grandpa Nelson's and Grandma Beulah's marriage records.  I now have it on photocopy from the FHC.  On the marriage certificate Grandpa is listed as Nelce Loveley.  Was that the real spelling of his name or did they spell it wrong?  I'm rather inclined to believe that the county clerk wrote it wrong.

I have ordered Grandpa Nelson's military records now that I have his Military ID number.  I have been told that it could take up to a year to receive word back, even if they don't fill it!  Figures.. it is the federal government!

William Lovely (Great Grandfather)

Items in hand with documentation:

  • 1900 US Federal Census
  • 1910 US Federal Census
  • 1920 US Federal Census
  • 1930 US Federal Census
  • Listing on the Social Security Death Index
  • Several Newspaper Articles

Much is needed in the way of documentation, but I am thankful for the items I do have since no one from this branch of the Lovely family seems to have posted any of their information online.  My current course of research remains the attempt to find William and Mary's marriage records.  Back to the microfilms!

Samuel Lovely (Great Great-Grandfather)

Items in hand with documentation:

  • 1850 US Federal Census
  • 1860 US Federal Census
  • 1870 US Federal Census
  • 1880 US Federal Census
  • 1900 US Federal Census
  • 1910 US Federal Census
  • 1920 US Federal Census
  • Marriage License & Certificate

Samuel Lovely is proving very elusive.  The last written word about him is the 1920 US Federal Census, Magoffin County, Kentucky.  Thereafter there is no mention of him any sources I have consulted.  He is not listed on the Kentucky State Death Index, 1911-2000.  Nor is he listed in any cemetery books or microfilm thus far consulted.

While I do have the census returns and his marriage license and certificate to Mary Cole, I still remain in the dark as to his exact birth date, death date, military service of any kind, etc.  He seems to close sometimes since he actually lived with my Grandpa Nelson, but since I don't have Grandpa to ask anything of anymore I feel lost. Ah, well, there is always those microfilms!

William Howard Lovely (Great Great Great-Grandfather)

Items in hand with documentation:

  • 1850 US Federal Census
  • 1860 US Federal Census
  • 1870 US Federal Census
  • Death Notice (Breathitt County, KY Death Records by Francis Ingmire)

My 3rd great grandfather remains my brickwall.  All allegations of his father being one "Ran Lovely" have not been backed up with proof or documentation.  Albeit, I have found him listed in the same general area on Knox County, Ky tax records with a number of males in the Howard family.  A coincidence?  Not sure.  I have given up finding William H. Lovely's parents for now.

I have found William Howard Lovely in the Breathitt County Tax Books, 1840-1867.  I have completely and to the letter transcribed those years and discovered that his name changed from William Howard to William Lovely sometime between 1847 and 1848.  Unclear why at this point, though I am currently searching the microfilm at the FHC of deeds for 1876, the year he died, to see if he left a will and if so, if there is mention of his father or mother.

So, you can see I have completed quite a lot this summer, but remain very active on the trail.  I have started to research other family surnames in order to keep my spirits up, especially when I have a nice, easy family that had no name changes and can be traced back to the 1700s fairly easy!  Who wouldn't want that family!  I'll keep you posted.

If you would like documentation for any of the sources I have mentioned, please contact me and let me know what you would like documentation for and your relationship to the Lovely family.  Thanks!
